On Thursday, March 5, more than 240 individuals joined the Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership for the 14th annual Best Boards Conference. For the first time, the conference was held in the new, state-of-the-art Hudspeth Auditorium, named for Rice alumni C.M. “Hank” and Demaris Hudspeth, who provided initial funding for the Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership in 2009. At Thursday’s event, the auditorium was filled with local nonprofit leaders and board members while keynote speaker Scott McClelland, H-E-B Houston division president, highlighted the power of storytelling, which is especially important in a tough fundraising environment. Throughout the day, attendees gained insight from experts on board governance, and were able to return to their organizations with actionable solutions and inspired ideas.
One participant highlighted the value in sharing the experience with a board member. “The board member I took really enjoyed the conference sessions and the networking time during breaks and lunch. It gave us a great opportunity to get to know each other and brainstorm strategies to improve our organization’s board.”
Thanks to everyone who presented and attended this year’s conference. We hope to see you again in one of our spring courses.
