Stories Where Everybody Sings

Hope Shiver

From madcap comedy to sober tragedy, opera uses words and music to explore the human experience. Some people find opera intimidating, but artist Hope Shiver strives to make it approachable in the course “Original Opera: A Collaborative Workshop.”Hope Shiver

Join Ms. Shiver and a group of amateur artists to create a new opera from scratch, exploring all the aspects of production. “Each person will bring a broad array of skills and talents,” says Ms. Shiver, so don’t worry if singing isn’t your thing. There will be many creative opportunities, from writing the story to finding music and designing the sets and props.

“Don’t be afraid of opera,” says Ms. Shiver. “Operas are simply stories, where everybody sings. What fun!”

Workshop participants will present their work as a world premiere on the final day of the course.

Join us starting February 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the new Anderson-Clarke Center.

Here’s a bonus video called “All the Great Operas in 10 Minutes.” Enjoy!
