The First Development and Finance Symposium

Development & Finance SymposiumRice University’s Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership and the Association of Fundraising Professionals hosted the first Development and Finance Symposium on June 11 and 12. This event brought Chief Development Officers and Chief Financial Officers from 19 states and Canada to Houston to discuss strategy and best practices.

Conference attendees participated in a survey prior to arriving and Dr. John Zietlow, professor of finance, Malone University, was able to provide feedback based on the responses in his session: Meeting of the Minds Around Metrics. He shared tools and newly developed financial health metrics with the CFO’s and CDO’s to help them gain an understanding between the two departments regarding success measures.

This interactive session provided a unique perspective for participants regarding the importance of a collaborative relationship between the development and finance team. The Chief Finance Officer panel included Rick Daigneault, Children’s Museum of Houston; Beth Tanner, Houston Food Bank; Stephen Sachnik, Houston Museum of Natural Science and Kimberly Cotner David, Baylor College of Medicine. Moderator Kathy Fountain guided the discussion to provide insight into the finance department for conference participants.

The two-day event offered significant opportunities for organizations to share best practices and learn from each other. The sessions provided strategies for staff within development and finance teams to develop realistic expectations and measure impact in a meaningful way for both departments.
