The Whole Span of Life

It is no secret that one of our favorite quotes from Rice’s first president, Edgar Odell Lovett, is “Education does not begin with the university, nor does it end in the university. It is a matter of life, the whole span of life….” In continuing studies, we often think of this quote in terms of education continuing through adulthood. One of our programs, however, is applying this much-loved principle to the pre-university part of life.

The Rice Oral & Written Language Laboratory, or OWL Lab, was recently featured in Rice News. This program, part of School Literacy and Culture, is an ancillary classroom for prekindergarten students at Gabriela Mistral Center for Early Childhood. The OWL Lab enables more than 400 children and their teachers to interact with two teacher leaders recognized for their contributions to the field of early literacy  and work together through meaningful curriculum designed to promote children’s development in English speaking, listening and writing skills.

Watch the brief video below to see how the Glasscock School is helping fulfill the Rice vision across the whole span of life.
