On April 16, 2013, we brought the Intensive English students out to the ball game! Fifty ESL students came out to support our Rice Owls as they took on the Texas Tech Red Raiders at Reckling Park. Some learned the ins and outs of America’s favorite pastime for the first time, while others gained new vocabulary about a sport that is already popular in their home countries. One student in particular enjoyed comparing the umpire’s signals for “Safe!” and “Youuuu’rrrre out!” to those he was familiar with in Japan. By the seventh inning stretch, it was clear that the Owls had the game in the bag, and our students were treated to an 11-2 win over Tech. Go Owls!
We would like to extend a special thank you to Rice Athletics for making this a great event.
